Lufthansa Systems enables new financing model for IFEC solutions / Successful project for Citilink impresses parent company Garuda Indonesia

Lufthansa Systems enables new financing model for IFEC solutions / Successful project for Citilink impresses parent company Garuda Indonesia

Demand is growing in the aviation industry for partially or fully financed IFEC solutions. Lufthansa Systems is cooperating with technology partners to offer a flexible new refinancing approach for making on-board entertainment and Internet attractive to airlines of all sizes with different business models.

“Many providers offer financing models, but they often lack an understanding of the aviation industry. We are closing this gap with our expertise in IFEC solutions and with BoardConnect, an open IT platform that allows hosted applications to be integrated into the IFEC system,” said Jan-Peter Gänse, Head of Passenger Experience Products & Solutions at Lufthansa Systems.

Lufthansa Systems’ first partner for partially and fully financed IFEC solutions is Mahata Aero Teknologi. Their e-commerce solution is based on commercial offers and advertising partners, which generate revenues in order to refinance the Internet services. This makes it possible to allocate costs in the long-term if necessary, so that airlines can offer their passengers free Internet access.

This new approach has already proven itself in practice. In mid-January, the Indonesian airline Citilink celebrated the official launch flight of the first aircraft with the new, free connectivity service – just six months after the contract was signed in the summer of 2018. Mahata Aero Teknologi is working alongside Lufthansa Systems in addition to Inmarsat and Lufthansa Technik. While Inmarsat, the leading satellite provider, is supplying the broadband Internet connection with its global GX Aviation network, Lufthansa Technik is providing the hardware and performing the installation design and certification.

“Lufthansa Systems brought us together with its partners Inmarsat and Lufthansa Technik so that we can cooperate with the world’s leading connectivity experts,” said Iwan Setiawan, Managing Director of Mahata Aero Teknologi. “The first two customers using our solution have shown that we can provide models to suit low-cost carriers as well as airlines with large fleets.”

This successful cooperation and smooth implementation impressed Citilink’s parent company, Garuda Indonesia enough to order the same setup for its fleet. The contract for this was signed in December 2018.

“We are very proud of these two projects and the successful cooperation with our partners. The demand for on-board Internet is very high particularly in the Asian market. The new financing models, which are tailored to the individual needs of each airline, also give rise to new opportunities and partnerships in the market,” said Olivier Krüger, Chief Executive Officer at Lufthansa Systems.

Citilink is a low-cost carrier and subsidiary of Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia’s National airline. With a fleet of 51 aircraft, Citilink flies to national destinations as well as Dili in East Timor year round. Garuda Indonesia is Indonesia’s national airline. It serves domestic and international destinations in the Middle and Far East, Australia and Europe with a fleet of 142 aircraft. Both airlines are based in Jakarta and are currently expanding their fleets.

Jogging, running and cycling for the Lufthansa Group’s aid organization help alliance

Jogging, running and cycling for the Lufthansa Group’s aid organization help alliance

To help employees overcome their inner couch potato for a good cause while doing something positive for themselves at the same time, Lufthansa Systems has come up with a very special campaign for 2019 called active4helpalliance. The idea is to pull together, get fitter, boost team spirit and, above all, collect money for the help alliance, the charitable aid organization of the Lufthansa Group.

Cycling, jogging or walking – every kilometer counts and is turned into euros by Lufthansa Systems. “The campaign started in early January and will run through the whole year. To ensure our employees’ motivation doesn’t wane over time and we gather a nice sum for needy children, we have set joint kilometer goals. If all the participants together manage to break the 10,000-kilometer mark by the end of March, we will double the amount reached as a bonus!“ said Olivier Krüger, CEO of Lufthansa Systems. “With this campaign, we want to acknowledge our responsibility for our employees’ health and, especially, our social responsibility – with a sense of fun and team spirit.“

Lufthansa Systems employees around the world are invited to participate in the campaign and collect kilometers. To make sure no kilometer is missed, all runners are tracking their distance using smartphones or fitness watches. All data is collected in the “endomondo” app so it is always possible to see how many kilometers the participants have already covered. At the end of 2019, the collected donations will be given to the help alliance.

“Every donation from us goes to one of the around 40 projects worldwide that are primarily helping young people. Our work is supported on various levels by employees of the Lufthansa Group, and we are delighted that Lufthansa Systems will make another contribution this year with the kilometers it covers,” said Andrea Pernkopf, Executive Director at help alliance.

The help alliance is the central pillar of the social engagement of the Lufthansa Group. As an international company and part of the German and international community, the Lufthansa Group takes responsibility for tackling current social challenges beyond its own business activities. In past years, the aid organization has supported more than 140 projects.

Active4helpalliance is not the first campaign Lufthansa Systems has initiated for the help alliance. The Lufthansa subsidiary has supported the aid organization with various fundraising campaigns for several years, such as employee anniversaries or the Christmas tombola.

Ten-year contract signed for Lido/RouteManual, Lido/mPilot, Lido/eRouteManual, Lido/AMDB, Lido/AMM and DVMS navigation solutions

Ten-year contract signed for Lido/RouteManual, Lido/mPilot, Lido/eRouteManual, Lido/AMDB, Lido/AMM and DVMS navigation solutions

Lufthansa Systems today announced that all airlines in the Lufthansa Group will use its entire portfolio of navigation solutions over the next ten years. This includes the Lido/mPilot and Lido/eRouteManual electronic map solutions based on the Lido/RouteManual paper maps, the dynamic Lido/AMM airport moving map with the high-precision Lido/AMDB airport mapping database, and a solution for document management (DVMS).

“As the process owner, we sat down with our Lufthansa Systems colleagues very early on and constructively fleshed out the arrangement that now benefits all of us,” said Robert Nyenhuis, Vice President Flight Operations Standards & Projects Lufthansa Group Airlines.

Many airlines in the Lufthansa Group were already using the Lido/eRouteManual electronic navigation maps. The different individual contracts with these airlines have now been harmonized. Lufthansa Aviation Training will also employ the electronic navigation maps in the future so that pilots in training can use the same solution they will later find on the flight deck. This harmonization will reduce both administrative effort and costs. Up until now, only Lufthansa Passage pilots have benefited from the high-precision Lido/AMDB data. A master agreement for Lido/AMDB now offers other companies the opportunity to use the product as well.

“Despite the airlines’ different needs, we were able to quickly find solutions based on pragmatic, constructive collaboration,” said Dr. Bernd Jurisch, Head of Flight & Navigation Products & Solutions at Lufthansa Systems. “We are grateful for the great trust the Lufthansa Group is placing in us with this ten-year agreement.”

The Lufthansa Group is an aviation company with operations worldwide. Cargo and passenger transportation together account for about 87 percent of the Group’s revenues. The airlines in the Lufthansa Group include Lufthansa Airlines, Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa CityLine, Austrian Airlines, Swiss, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Edelweiss and Brussels.

Airline Consulting with focus on crew management, network planning and operations control

Airline Consulting with focus on crew management, network planning and operations control

The airline consulting team from Lufthansa Systems started working with Bulgaria Air to optimize even better their operational processes and to review the capacity planning. Since the end of August, the consultants from Lufthansa Systems Airline Consulting have worked with the Bulgarian airline to analyze and optimize its crew management, network planning and operations control (OCC).

“We want to enhance network decisions and continually improve the operational processes so that Bulgaria Air can continue offering the customers the highest quality”, said Dimitar Bojanski, chairman of Techno Capital, the company that provides technology to the Bulgarian carrier with which the consulting team is closely collaborating. “We are already working with the NetLine/Crew crew management solution, the NetLine/Ops operations control solution and the NetLine/Sched schedule management solution and we are pleased that the independent consultants from Lufthansa Systems are now supporting us with their knowledge and expertise.”

In the first project phase, the airline consultants from Lufthansa Systems visited Bulgaria Air to analyze the status quo of the airline’s operations controlling. Phase two of the consulting project aimed at evaluating the airline’s strategy for crew management, network planning and operations control and then provide concrete recommendations for network decisions and processes optimization. This has been based on numerous workshops and assessments held with managers and employees of the respective departments.

The consulting experts at Lufthansa Systems have spent more than 20 years working for international airlines of all sizes with various business models. Amid increasing competitive pressure felt by airlines in the international market, more and more carriers are looking for professional consulting services. This is why Lufthansa Systems has continuously expanded its consulting division in recent years. What distinguishes Lufthansa Systems’ consultants is their independence. Lufthansa Systems Airline Consulting guides management decisions to optimize airline core processes, increase efficiency and reduce costs.

“While many consultancies specialize in a single area, we cover the entire spectrum of consulting for airlines, thus ensuring that problems are always examined from all angles,” said Tino Herrmann, Senior Vice President Airline Consulting at Lufthansa Systems. “In our consulting work, we strive for a long-term, equal partnership.”

Bulgaria Air is the national airline of Bulgaria, with headquarters in Sofia. It was founded in 2002 and privatized from 2005. After privatization, the company began to restructure and modernize and has now become Bulgaria’s biggest airline. Bulgaria Air flies from Sofia to the domestic destinations of Varna and Burgas as well as more than 28 cities and vacation destinations in Europe.
