Rescue from depths of over 1000 meters

Nikolett Rehány and the rescue team descending into the cave

Nov 23, 2023

Late in the evening on Saturday, 2 September 2023, the Hungarian Cave Rescue Service (hereinafter referred to as BMSZ) received a call for urgent assistance. Mark Dickey, a 40-year-old experienced American cave explorer, was taken ill during an international expedition with Hungarian participants to explore the Morca Cave in southern Turkey. The European Cave Rescue Association (ECRA) immediately started looking for a cave rescue team that could immediately go to the location, get down to a depth of over 1000 metres and provide Mark with professional care. They soon received a reply from the BMSZ, the only organisation that met all three criteria. Nikolett Rehány, our colleague from Hungary, who has been working for Lufthansa Systems Hungária as a Software Developer, descended into the cave as a member of the Hungarian team. We talked with her about the circumstances of the rescue in Turkey, and also about the secrets of a special hobby.
