Air Transat will navigate with Lido/mPilot app and use data from Lido/FMS

Lufthansa Systems today announced that Air Transat has opted for its Lido/mPilot mobile navigation solution and will also use the precise navigation data from the Lido/FMS database. The two companies have signed a seven-year contract for these solutions.

“Using the Lido/mPilot navigation app is an important step for us in moving toward a paperless cockpit. The app’s functions and intuitive operation excited us,” said Sylvain Aubin, Vice-President of Flight operations at Air Transat. “We place great value in innovative IT solutions and are looking for a provider who can offer comprehensive support. Lufthansa Systems won us over with their quality and service.”

Lido/mPilot is a mobile navigation solution which supports pilots before, during and after a flight. Around 60 airlines have already opted for Lido/mPilot since the app was launched in early 2015. The modular app combines functions like airport maps, a dynamically generated enroute chart, and a document management and distribution system that enables pilots to access documents and messages both at home and on the move. A status overview with intuitive icons guarantees a clear flow of information. Pilots receive important updates via push notifications.

The relevant navigation data in Lido/mPilot are based on the Lufthansa Systems Lido/FMS database, which will also be available to the airline on board for its flight management systems. The high-quality data are individually tailored to an airline’s aircraft types, cockpit systems and route network – thus ensuring the best autopilot support. The database contains all important route information such as altitude data, airways and airport data. The navigation data, which are based on global aeronautical information, are updated every 28 days according to the AIRAC cycle. More than 200 airlines around the world rely on the certified navigation data from Lido/FMS.

“We won over the customer with the quality of our Lido/FMS data and, above all, the intuitive operation of the Lido/mPilot app and our outstanding customer service,” said Michael Schmidtborn, Vice President Sales & Services North America at Lufthansa Systems. “We are delighted to have Air Transat as a new customer in North America. This agreement also highlights the growing importance of mobile solutions in the airline industry.”

Strong customer growth seen for Lido/Navigation solutions from Lufthansa Systems

Strong customer growth seen for Lido/Navigation solutions from Lufthansa Systems

Lufthansa Systems remains on the right track with its navigation solutions. The airline IT specialist reported numerous new Lido/Navigation contracts, contract extensions and product implementations in 2015. 25 new customers opted for solutions from the Lido/Navigation product range. Lufthansa Systems also successfully completed a total of 35 product implementations for customers.

Lido/Navigation solutions are being used by more than 200 airlines and customers of all sizes, with different business models and alliances, including low-cost, network, cargo and charter airlines. Each year around 570 million passengers worldwide fly on planes using Lufthansa Systems’ navigation charts, which are available through the paper-based Lido/RouteManual solution as well as the electronic Lido/eRouteManual (Windows) and Lido/mPilot (iOS) solutions. To ensure smooth taxiing processes, the established Lido/eRouteManual solution can connect seamlessly to Lido/AMM, a geodatabase that complies with the ARINC 816 standard. And Lido/FMS offers highly accurate, customized data for an airline’s flight management system.

“2015 was a year of product developments and mobile optimization for our Lido/Navigation chart solutions,” said Patricia Cramer, Vice President Lido/Navigation at Lufthansa Systems. “The focus was on clarity and efficient use.” The Lido/mPilot iPad app, which was first introduced at the end of 2014, features a useful combination of airport maps, takeoff and landing procedures, a seamlessly zoomable and dynamic enroute chart and a document management system.

The latest software release, which has been available since November, includes additional optimizations: Now all general documents (the GEN part) can be viewed directly in the app in a clear, interactive table, and pilots can search for and bookmark individual files if necessary. The new change log shows the details of updates from the regular data revision cycle (AIRAC), which offers improved data transparency for pilots as well as a swift, targeted overview of changes affecting their flights. As requested by customers, the new version 1.1 also makes it possible to link directly to external systems. This can be activated by a button integrated in the application for quick access to a number of different operational data sources. The customer decides which sources to link to.

In addition to upgrading the Lido/mPilot application, Lufthansa Systems spent the second half of the year focusing on the new Lido/eRouteManual release, which introduced the Mobile Updater. This enables wireless data updates, making it much easier to use the digital navigation solution on mobile devices. Pilots can now update the digital Lido/eRouteManual charts at any time, from anywhere.

Furthermore, administrators can now control the distribution of Lido/eRouteManual data via the DDS (Data Distribution System) portal, create new users, and maintain an up-to-the-minute overview of the update status of all devices across the entire fleet. This is important because each navigation chart update must be clearly documented for the authorities. Airlines that also use the Lido/mPilot app can control both applications via the same web portal, which greatly simplifies administration.

Embedding the navigation solutions in partner systems was another important topic in 2015. Lufthansa Systems worked very intensively to establish useful interfaces to different EFB solutions. Lido/mPilot, for example, has an interface for flight plans so that the navigation solution can be opened in another EFB app to display the selected route. Lido/eRouteManual, in turn, can now integrate information such as current weather conditions. This improved program compatibility gives customers more flexibility when it comes to choosing and using an EFB system. It also further simplifies processes on the flight deck.

A total of 110 airlines plan routes using the flight planning system from Lufthansa Systems

A total of 110 airlines plan routes using the flight planning system from Lufthansa Systems

The year 2015 was a successful one for the Lido/Flight flight planning system from Lufthansa Systems. In addition to several new contracts, contract renewals and product implementations, the experts of the airline IT specialist are working on the new generation of the solution, Lido/Flight 4D. Lido/Flight is being used successfully worldwide by leading airlines of all sizes, business models and alliances – including low-cost, network, cargo and charter airlines.

Lido/Flight has performed successfully in the market for more than 15 years. This year, the customer base expanded to comprise a total fleet of around 5,800 aircraft. A total of 110 airlines are currently using Lido/Flight to calculate over 30,000 flights daily. Lufthansa Systems acquired important new customers for its flight planning solution in 2015, and several existing customers renewed their contracts. “We are especially proud of our eight successful implementations – the most extensive and, in terms of the Chinese market, most important one being the implementation for China’s largest airline, China Southern. After the project implementation phase, it’s always nice to see our customers profiting from our solution in their daily business and planning optimal routes with Lido/Flight,” said Dr. Bernd Jurisch, Vice President Lido/Flight at Lufthansa Systems.

Lufthansa Systems also offers its customers the opportunity to set up a cross-airline platform for Lido/Flight. Two such platforms were successfully introduced for customers this year so that the participating partner airlines can leverage synergies and plan their flights even more efficiently. There are a number of advantages to a shared platform: First, the airlines save money thanks to the simplified infrastructure because every participating customer can access the same system from their respective sites. They also benefit from operational advantages – both in their daily work and in the event of operational irregularities. This is because the shared platform enables all of the partners to plan each other’s routes and comprehensively optimize processes in the Operations Control Center. A total of three platforms are in use, one involving four airlines and two with three airlines each.

The core features of the flight planning solution are the integrated and continually updated aeronautical database and the so-called optimizer. Based on all flight-related data, weather conditions and the current airspace situation including any restrictions, Lido/Flight fully automatically or interactively calculates the most suitable route for each flight. The system has around 2,700 configuration parameters, enabling it to be adapted to specific customer requirements and regulations. Lido/Flight provides dispatchers with significant optimization options regarding flight time, fuel consumption or costs of each flight. In various comparative analyses based on more than 4,000 flight plans, Lido/Flight was able to reduce fuel costs by an average of 2 percent, cut flying times by 1.9 percent and save 1.6 percent of air traffic control fees compared to its competitors.

Lufthansa Systems is working closely with its customers and partners on the further development of the system. The focus is on modern 4D optimization based on various target functions as well as the further automation of flight planning and control processes. “With Lido/Flight 4D, we will meet future flight planning and control demands while expanding our market share at the same time,” Jurisch explained. “We will continue to focus on this project in the new year.”
