Improving Pilots' Situational Awareness During Takeoff and Landing

Takeoff and landing are two of the most crucial phases of a mission. To ensure that pilots can focus on the task at hand, whether it be taxiing at the airport or preparing for takeoff and landing, we have integrated several new features into our iOS-based charting application, the Lido/mPilot. Read on to find out more.

First step toward weather integration

The aviation industry, more so than almost any other industry, is affected by weather. As the climate changes, significant weather events are increasing in magnitude and frequency. Thus, weather is one of the core drivers behind our Lido product strategy: Total Mission Optimization (TMO). With TMO, we aim to give pilots all the tools and information to be able to make the right decisions at the right time.

As a first step toward full weather integration, the Lido mPilot now includes METAR & TAF information, which provides pilots with information about all factors that may affect the takeoff and landing of an aircraft. These factors include wind, visibility and precipitation. This information leads to safer takeoffs and landings, as it increases pilots' situational awareness, and also helps pilots in making better decisions regarding emergency landings, as it can help pick a suitable alternate airport. The next steps in the application regarding weather are the inclusion of ATIS information, followed by the display of weather polygons on the enroute map.

 

Improvements to the Lido AMM

Additionally, we have integrated new features in the Lido AMM to further improve pilots' situational awareness during takeoff and landing: line annotations, pin annotation and the lookup for declared distances and runway information.

With the new line annotations feature, pilots can quickly trace their taxi clearance visually on their airport moving map. This gives them the possibility to stay more focused on taxiing without worrying about memorizing their clearance. With the pin annotations, the pilot notes from the enroute map are coming to the Lido AMM. This allows pilots to write reminders, such as listening to ATIS before takeoff, or attach documents to a pin which should be viewed when the aircraft has reached a specific geographic point. Finally, information that is important to take into account for the performance of their aircraft can now be viewed with the tap on a runway's information button. This includes information* such as the runway's bearing, elevation, width and length, and declared distances (TORA, ASDA and TODA).
