Training air traffic controllers with data from Lufthansa Systems

Lido FMSSkyguide, the Swiss air traffic services provider, plans to train its new controllers using aeronautical data from Lufthansa Systems. In addition to own national data, Skyguide will feed aeronautical input from Lufthansa Systems into its ATC simulators. Lufthansa Systems will be meeting the demand for data outside the Swiss airspace. Skyguide has made a conscious decision in favor of Lufthansa Systems based on its reliability as an EASA-certified provider. The aeronautical database from Lufthansa Systems follows the ARINC 424 standard, which means that its data can be processed especially for use in flight simulators. This task will be handled by the data management experts at skyguide.

The agreement gives skyguide access to current data which comprehensively and realistically simulate the entire airspace over Europe as well as flight navigation systems such as the ILS (Instrument Landing System), VOR (VHF Omni-directional Radio Range) and NDB (Non-directional Radio Beacon). The aeronautical database from Lufthansa Systems contains all important route information worldwide including altitude and airport data. It is updated every 28 days according to the AIRAC cycle. All important aeronautical data are integrated in the system, including information on airports, airways, waypoints along routes and at destinations, navaids, and procedures for holding patterns and approaches.

Skyguide is responsible for air traffic services in Switzerland and parts of the adjacent foreign airspace. The company directs around 3,400 civilian and military aircraft each day and over 1.23 million aircraft each year through one of the most complex and heavily used airspaces in Europe.
