Innovation in Asia: Garuda uses 2D boarding pass solution from Lufthansa Systems
Lufthansa Systems has successfully implemented the first 2D bar-coded boarding pass (BCBP) solution for the national airline Garuda Indonesia. The first printers and reading devices for the new boarding passes have gone into operation at the airport in the provincial capital of Palangkaraya on the island of Borneo. This makes Garuda Indonesia one of the first airlines in Asia to comply with the IATA mandate to adopt this innovative solution for issuing boarding passes. In the long term, the 2D bar-coded boarding pass will be introduced at all Garuda destinations in Indonesia. Preparations for this are already underway at the airports in Jakarta and Denpasar (Bali).
2D bar-coded boarding passes feature a printed two-dimensional computer code instead of a magnetic strip. The two-dimensional bar code has greater storage capacity, so passengers only need a single boarding document for their entire trip, even if they pass through several transfer airports. These new-generation boarding passes save a great deal of paper, which makes them both environmentally friendly and economical. They also increase convenience for passengers, who no longer need to make their way to a transfer desk when changing planes.
To enhance this solution, Lufthansa Systems is currently developing an integrated mobile check-in application based on the electronic bar code. This application can send bar codes directly to a passenger's mobile device, such as a PDA or cell phone. With this electronic bar-coded boarding pass, passengers can proceed directly to the gate and board their flight. When this is combined with a Web check-in function, passengers can print their 2D bar-coded boarding passes at home on normal paper with a conventional printer.
Garuda Indonesia was founded in 1950 and is based in Jakarta. It is the largest airline in Indonesia and serves a wide network of destinations in Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
