THAI leading the way with eRouteManual from Lufthansa Systems

June 14 , 2007

Entire Airbus and Boeing fleet will migrate by end of 2008

When it accepted its first Airbus 340-500 equipped with the Lido eRouteManual, Thai Airways International (THAI) kicked off the fleet-wide introduction of the electronic navigation charts from Lufthansa Systems. By the end of 2008, all of the airline's nearly 90 Airbus and Boeing aircraft will be fitted with the Lido eRouteManual, the technological leader in its field.

THAI has been using the paper-based navigation charts from Lufthansa Systems since October 2006. "The clarity and user-friendliness of the navigation charts is impressive. With both the electronic and paper charts, it's possible to see all data at a glance," said Captain Naruj Komalarajun from THAI. "All information on the charts corresponds completely with the data in the flight management system. The integration of these products is a great advantage for flight safety."

The Lido eRouteManual electronic navigation charts are currently being approved for use by THAI DCA. After the aviation authorities have granted their approval, the eRouteManual from Lufthansa Systems will gradually be introduced on all of the around 40 Airbus and 50 Boeing aircraft of THAI as part of an EFB’s key module.

As one of the many airlines which simultaneously operate aircraft from a variety of manufacturers, THAI will also benefit from the flexibility of this navigation solution from Lufthansa Systems. "The ability to use the charts on any hardware throughout the fleet and IT based accessible from anywhere played a major role in our decision." explained Captain Naruj.

The eRouteManual charts include taxiway displays for airports, approach and take-off charts, and a seamless worldwide route chart. This includes the latest country- and airport-specific regulations and data. The database on which the charts are based is continually updated.
One aspect of the electronic charts' user-friendliness is the fact that cockpit crews can flexibly determine the level of detail presented by the charts based on the flight situation. Depending on the chosen zoom step, information can be presented either in detail or reduced to key aspects as needed. As a result, pilots always have all the necessary route information at their fingertips. Topographical information such as mountain heights, the courses of rivers etc. is presented to scale. For instance, this enables pilots to calculate exactly the time needed to complete certain flight sections as well as departure and approach procedures.
