Lufthansa Systems will participate in this year’s convention from March 14 to 16 in Miami.
One of the leading full-service IT providers for the airline and aviation industries worldwide,
the company now applies its extensive expertise to cruise ships, trains and buses, thereby
bringing to life the fully mobile infotainment system that has it all: telephone, internet,
interactive TV, video on demand, intranet.
Lufthansa Systems’ new mobile infotainment solution “SkyTainment” was developed by
Lufthansa Systems in cooperation with TOMORROW FOCUS Technologies to provide both,
an outstanding entertainment experience for the passengers onboard cruise vessels and full
support to the cruise line’s business processes. It represents an innovative, modular platform
for onboard networked communication, information and entertainment. Designed to meet the
requirements for mobile IT environments, SkyTainment has been especially adapted for the
high needs onboard cruise ships and yachts. It offers a standardized platform for telephone,
internet, interactive TV, video and audio services and other onboard media. The technology
is IP-based, allowing universal access to network content throughout a ship via both cable
and wireless LAN. All kinds of terminals can be used, such as, for example fixed in-cabin
systems or mobile devices.
Thanks to this technology, cruise passengers on board the German cruise ship EUROPA
have been able to enjoy all the comforts of modern communication and entertainment
technology since October 2005. The EUROPA is the flagship of the Hapag-Lloyd cruise fleet.
In the past five years, it was the only cruise ship in the world to be awarded the “5-star-plus”
rating by the Berlitz Cruise Guide. Lufthansa Systems is currently in negotiations to equip a
number of other cruise lines with SkyTainment.
“Mobile communication is increasingly demanded by passengers traveling onboard cruise
ships” said Stefan Hansen, Senior Vice President Infrastructure Services at Lufthansa Systems.“The growing cruise line market is very promising to Lufthansa Systems. Our SkyTainment offers passengers the possibility to stay connected during their time on board. At the same
time it provides interesting cost advantages over previous solutions.”
Furthermore, this solution for onboard mobile communication may also be adapted for trains,
buses and aircraft. It meets the highest requirements in terms of functionality, utility and
entertainment value everywhere. If you are interested in hearing more about this innovative
product, please come see us at our booth 156-20 in hall D within the German Pavilion.
