PERmed GmbH offers doctors and clinics ability to centrally manage diagnostic data and images
PERmed GmbH, based in Hannover, is currently establishing a Germany-wide infrastructure which will allow
doctors and hospitals to exchange medical imaging data and diagnostic reports digitally. Lufthansa Systems
was contracted to provide and operate the technological infrastructure for the project. The goal of the new
solution is to accelerate the exchange of information between clinics and doctors working in practices. The
new solution also frees doctors from having to maintain complex digital archives in their own practices.
Lufthansa Systems successfully completed the first phase of the RDA (Regional Digital Archive) project in
the fourth quarter of 2005. A clinic in Hannover has been connected to the system, and a radiology practice
in Schleswig-Holstein will follow. A central database stores all the imaging data and diagnostic reports
from X-ray, computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, endoscope and sonograph examinations. Only
doctors and their staff in authorized medical institutions, such as doctors’ practices, specialist clinics
and health authorities, may access the confidential medical data. PERmed runs service centers and handles
the accreditation of the participants. Data is transferred securely via permanent connections, DSL lines and
remote dial-up.
In this project, Lufthansa Systems is contributing its extensive expertise as an operator of powerful,
complex data centers. Medical data in particular demands fail-safe storage concepts, reliable long-term
archive systems and secure user identification.
