Using the Digital Pen and special paper, handwritten information can now be captured
electronically during the writing process. It is then communicated to an order system
within just a few minutes. On the surface, the innovative Digital Pen works like a regular
pen. At the same time, it can also capture, store and transmit information worldwide to
a digital system.
Lufthansa Systems and Portal Systems Consulting GmbH Hamburg have
now added the Digital Pen solution to their product portfolios.
In addition to its conventional pen refill, the Digital Pen features
an integrated processor, storage memory and an infrared camera.
This enables the pen to digitally capture information while a form
is being completed manually. The Digital Pen can store up to 50
handwritten A4-size pages. This fast and simple process
can significantly reduce costs for capturing orders and accelerate
the entire order processing cycle.
The Digital Pen is used in combination with specially printed paper.
Based on a special printing process, the paper has a grid structure
which is invisible to the human eye. Lufthansa Systems adapts existing
forms together with the customer and has them printed on the appropriate
special paper. During the writing process, the camera scans the
paper's grid. By storing which tip movement occurred at which grid
positions, the pen digitizes the writing process.
The information stored by the pen is transmitted to the central
server on the Internet via a mobile phone (using bluetooth and GPRS)
or PC. The exact same form is stored electronically on the server
which receives the data and displays it on a screen. Before any
data is sent, the system checks whether the Digital Pen is authorized
to transmit information. Data is sent encoded to prevent any unauthorized
access. It takes just oneminute to transfer the data to the electronic
form, which then can be processed immediately.
Alternatively, the information can be collected and stored in the
pen and sent at a later time.
"For years, our electronic document processing company has
been specializing in capturing, processing and storing documents
electronically for airlines, the German railways and customers outside
the transport industry. Our innovative IT solutions like the Digital
Pen enable organizations to save time and costs while benefiting
from improved quality and customer satisfaction," says Dr.
Gunter Küchler, Managing Director Sales and Marketing at Lufthansa
Systems Group GmbH.
Lufthansa Systems will present the Digital Pen at IT:M, a fare
and convention presenting IT solutions for small and medium-size
enterprises from September 15 to 18, 2004 in Hamburg, Hall 07, 1st
floor, Stand 252 (joint "Mobile Solutions" stand).
