Lufthansa Systems gains new partner for its aviation security consortium

November 9, 2004

Lufthansa Systems today announced that the management consulting firm ABS Airport Business Solutions AG is the newest member of the "S3 – Security from Seat to Seat" consortium led by Lufthansa Systems. At the start of the year, the program won the bid to participate in Germany's nationwide Aviation Research Program 2003 – 2007 sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor (BMWA).

A total of six partners are now involved in the "S3 – Security from Seat to Seat" consortium. The primary task of the program is to collaborate with airlines and airports to further improve security standards in passenger handling and to make security procedures faster and easier for customers. ABS AG combines solid expertise with innovative information technology to deliver reliable, transparent data which assists in decision-making when planning the expansion or operational and organizational development of an airport. As part of the consortium, ABS AG will develop a detailed terminal simulation. In this simulation, various security control scenarios will be mapped and analyzed, particularly as regards the use of biometric security systems.

The goal of the "S3 – Security from Seat to Seat" project, which will run until the end of 2005, is to bring about procedural improvements, accelerate processes and significantly increase passenger comfort and security. New methods and security technologies can be implemented to achieve this. The focus here is on efficiency, as security measures – which have been stepped up since the events of September 11, 2001 – are one of the most cost-intensive aspects of airport operations. Process optimization can lead to significant cost savings in this area.

Lufthansa Systems, which is leading the consortium, will cooperate with the other consortium partners to develop technologically innovative and economically efficient solutions. The consortium includes RAND Europe, a company renowned for its benchmark studies, which will offer support in methodology development and project management and will provide the data for simulations. SAT Simulations- und Automations-Technologie GmbH, Germany's leading simulation consultant, is also represented in the consortium and will contribute to the creation of simulation models, while Dresden University of Technology will focus primarily on the aspect of contingency management. Another partner in the consortium is the German Aerospace Center (Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V.), which will handle the integration of the simulators developed by the various partners.
