Going paperless with Lufthansa Systems’ Lido/FlightBag generates substantial savings

October 06, 2009

Innovative EFB solution suits all aircraft types and hardware classes

EFB For many years, airlines have been working to reduce the amount of paper in the cockpit in order to reduce weight and to increase efficiency. Lido/FlightBag takes this initiative to the next level. The electronic flight bag (EFB) is a major step forward towards optimized flight deck processes. With Lido/FlightBag, Lufthansa Systems offers a technologically advanced EFB solution that generates considerable savings for the airline and reduces the pilots’ workload.

“Lido/FlightBag provides cockpit crews with an electronic information management system that combines pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight activities as well as on-board and ground services,” explained Marc Szepan, Senior Vice President Airline Operations Solutions at Lufthansa Systems.

Using Lido/FlightBag, an airline can generate significant annual cost savings per aircraft due to the reduced amount of paper-driven weight carried on board. Additionally, printing and distribution costs for cockpit documentation such as navigational charts, technical publications, and flight operations manuals can be avoided entirely, saving up to 1,000 dollars per aircraft annually. In all, a major international network carrier can save about 4.3 million dollars per year. Reduced fuel consumption and less paper consumption also ease the burden on the environment.

Lido/FlightBag integrates a variety of applications for the paperless planning and execution of flights. The individual applications are fully integrated and can exchange data amongst them. In addition, the platform can receive data from the cockpit avionic system. This guarantees uniform information throughout the flight. Lido/FlightBag also enables quick access to current operational data and other important flight-related documents. Ultimately, this reduces the pilots’ workload and contributes to a safe and efficient flight.

The applications running on the Lido/FlightBag can be customized according to an airline’s requirements. Among others, airlines can opt for the Lido/eRouteManual electronic navigation charts, enabling pilots to see all relevant route information at a glance. They may also select the Electronic Flight Folder (EFF), an electronic briefing package that contains all flight-related documents and data in a standardized data structure, allowing for bookmarks and annotations.

The Lido/FlightBag ground portal connects the EFB and its applications to an airline’s ground environment. It enables the EFB administrator to track and trace all relevant information and handle the entire update process and ensures an airline’s operational and commercial sovereignty over its ground-cockpit data flows independent of any aircraft manufacturer. The flight deck processes can be enhanced even further by integrating the ground portal with our publishing system for Electronic Flight Operations Manual (EFOM), the flight planning solution Lido/Flight or the crew management system NetLine/Crew.

As an additional advantage, Lido/FlightBag is independent of EFB hardware devices and aircraft types. This is especially important for commercial airlines that operate mixed fleets. It can run as a Class 1 solution on commercial off-the-shelf notebooks, it can be permanently installed in the cockpit as a Class 2 solution or integrated with a Class 3 on-board information solution. This provides unparalleled flexibility to the airlines.

A number of international airlines have chosen Lido/FlightBag, among them Lufthansa and Croatia Airlines.
