Emirates to fly with electronic navigation charts from Lufthansa Systems

February 20, 2008

Dubai home carrier also renews contract for Lido OC dispatch solution

Lido FMSEmirates Airline and Lufthansa Systems today announced that they are taking a major step towards the paperless cockpit. The Dubai-based carrier will be using Lido RouteManual, the navigation chart solution from Lufthansa Systems, effective spring 2008. Just two months ago, Emirates had decided to extend the use of the Lufthansa Systems flight planning and dispatch solution, Lido OC, for another five years.

In the first phase, Emirates will start using Lido RouteManual paper navigation charts. These cover all flight phases from push-back to arrival. Meanwhile, the implementation of Lido eRouteManual electronic charts will be started as a Class I solution based on laptop computers. This will later be changed to an integrated Class II system, featuring the complete application including airport charts. As a unique feature, the solution will also include MovingMap, the Lufthansa Systems enroute chart displaying the aircraft’s actual position.

Adel Al Redha, Executive Vice President Engineering and Operations at Emirates, said: “Our objective is to introduce and maximize the use of digital data onboard the aircraft and progressively phase out the paper document. This will enhance crew integration in accessing the onboard document and expedite the updates of data to our fleet. The introduction of Navigational Chart is a major step towards meeting this objective and we are pleased to have established this partnership with Lufthansa Systems for the development and introduction of this feature.”

"We are proud to continue our long-standing partnership with Emirates. Our solutions will enable Emirates to handle their continued growth and at the same time deliver smooth daily operations. We are glad that Emirates not only extended our existing agreement but decided for an additional solution from our portfolio,” said Marc Szepan, Senior Vice President Airline Operations Solutions at Lufthansa Systems.

Emirates has been an established customer of Lufthansa Systems for more than ten years. The airline had already tested Lido eRouteManual during the Airbus A380 test flights as part of the provider selection process.

Lufthansa Systems offers an integrated approach in the area of navigation charts. A number of clients rely on the proven paper charts while reserving the option or being already in the process of implementing the electronic charts solution. The advantages of the electronic version are obvious: The system eliminates the printing and constant distribution of revised paper charts as well as carrying them in every cockpit. The flight route as entered into the FMS is automatically highlighted on the displayed charts. Company information can be integrated into both printed and electronic versions. Having the same provider for these items ensures constant accuracy and updated documents throughout.

The decision for Lido eRouteManual comes just weeks after the contract between Emirates and Lufthansa Systems to use the Lido Operations Center (Lido OC) flight planning solution for another five years. Lido OC uses a large number of parameters to calculate the optimal route for each flight before departure, supporting airlines in minimizing their fuel and operating costs. At the same time, it maintains safety and flexibility in operations. With its modern technology and user-friendly architecture, Lido OC covers all aspects of flight planning and the associated follow-up processes.

More than 160 airlines around the world use solutions from the Airline Operations Solutions division of Lufthansa Systems to optimize their flight operations.
