ELWIS now speaks Chinese
With ELWIS, Lufthansa Systems is offering international customers from South America to China a complete system for air cargo handling. This system allows our customers to achieve higher throughput rates and considerably lower costs. The solution therefore fulfills the current demands of the market in terms of service, information, speed and security.

The most significant new development within the system in 2004 was the link-up with customs systems. This enables the shipping agents and handling companies connected to the system to complete the customs clearance procedures quickly and efficiently when handling cargo. With ATLAS, CHIEF and CHIEF NES, not only the process of exchanging data with customs officials has changed, a whole new procedure has also been introduced. This will make it possible to quickly and easily link ELWIS with the customs systems in other countries as well, such as AMS in the USA.

Since 1993, ELWIS has been used successfully at numerous airports, including Berlin, Billund (Denmark), Bucharest, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Luxembourg, Stockholm and Guayuaquil (Equador). In summer 2004, the Cargo Handling Centre at Robin Hood Airport in Great Britain also decided to implement the cargo handling system.

Lufthansa Systems will continue to build on this success in the future and tap new markets. For this reason, ELWIS was adapted specially for the Chinese market in 2004. The user interface has recently been made available in the Chinese language. Additionally, all cargo documents can also be created using Chinese characters. In 2005, ELWIS will be adapted for Spanish customers as well in order to strengthen its presence in South America.
